Overview
ZIMBA project aims to develop an innovative heat pump system based on an Absorption Heat Transformer (AHT) using ammonia/water refrigerant. Designed to operate at 15 kW (thermal), it will provide industrial heat starting at 110 °C and later scaling up to 130 °C. An integrated ejector will enhance flexibility, ensuring adaptability across various industrial applications. By efficiently upgrading low-grade waste heat, ZIMBA supports broader energy system decarbonization - reducing reliance on fossil fuels and complementing the integration of renewable energy sources (RES) into the grid.
Funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Action (RIA) program, the ZIMBA project is coordinated by CEA (the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission) and unites research institutions and industry experts. The project aims to boost energy efficiency, reduce CO₂ emissions, and support the transition to sustainable industrial heating solutions.
